While most children spent their summers playing ball, taking swimming lessons or riding bikes, Diana Tyler signed up for music enrichment classes at the local elementary school. They say that some addictions are genetically inherited...
Her mother (gifted with a powerful operatic soprano voice) and father (a fan and collector of big band music) made certain that music was a constant backdrop to everyday life. Raised in a home where two- and three-part harmony accompanied the nightly kitchen clean-up chores, Diana and her siblings eventually found themselves serving as their church's choir which her mother (despite not being able to read a note of music) directed.
Music continued to be a part of Diana's life--from singing in school choirs to marching with area drum & bugle corps. She later took up the guitar...and married a bass guitar-player.
Diana eventually joined a songwriting critique group based in Columbus (Songwriters and Poets' Critique). A trip to Nashville with several members of the group brought her a lucky spot on the stages of two of the city's most famous venues--The Bluebird Cafe and Douglas Corner--where her performances were enthusiastically received by both audiences. Publishers from Nashville and Canada soon began taking notice.
A Christmas/Father's Day song ("Only Joseph") Diana wrote was eventually selected for inclusion on the 2007 Christmas Album "He's Christmas" by Rosebud Records artists J3, a women's country trio, in addition to the label's "Rosebud Sampler" album. Diana's music has also appeared on several compilation albums, including 2 cuts ("He's There" and "No-Blues Blues") on the WeAreChristian Genesis Series music samplers and a cut on "A Disciples Sampler" by the Christian Church [Disciples of Christ]). In addition, Diana's song, "Dream On, Sisters!" was selected as the title song of a joint music project of the Disciples and United Church of Christ for The Mix in '06, an international gathering of women from both denominations (which also served as the Disciples of Christ's 2006 Women's Quadrennial gathering). She performed the song live for the event's 4,000-member audience. Diana followed up that gathering by writing the song, "Awake!" for the DoC's 2010 Women's Quadrennial.
An active member of the North Eaton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Diana and her husband made up half of the Christian rock band CRISIS, with Diana serving as the group's songwriter, vocalist and rhythm guitarist. The group helped lead the church's contemporary worship services and performed at coffee houses, festivals, conferences and retreats throughout Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. CRISIS released a cd (CRISIS and Diana Tyler) in 1999 that contained a mix of live, in-studio cuts with the band, some solo acoustic tracks by Tyler and two gospel tracks featuring a female vocal trio. Although reviews were very favorable, other commitments caused CRISIS to disband in December, 2003.
Diana has had praise choruses published as part of a children's church school curriculum (Chalice Press' "Journey Through the Bible") and released a companion recording, Psalmthing to Sing About. In addition, one of her novelty songs, "Christmas in Arizona (XMASnAZ)",was scored for stage band and choral octet with the help of local high school band director Clarence Barber for Midview High School's Christmas concert. More recently, she has written songs for children's musicals for video and the theatre through Captain Dave Productions.
A BMI artist, Diana served as co-moderator of the Cleveland Chapter of Just Plain Folks (an internet music community) and continues to be active in Cleveland Songwriters. Diana has also acted onstage and/or played in the pit orchestras of several community theatre productions ("Grease"--Columbia Township Theatre; "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"--Elyria Summer Theatre; "The Last Five Years"--Strongsville Community Theatre; "Little Shop of Horrors"--Huntington Playhouse; "Pump Boys and Dinettes"--North Ridgeville's Olde Towne Hall Theatre; and, "Schoolhouse Rock Live!"--Amherst's Workshop Players).
Diana has served on staff at North Eaton Christian Church as its Worship Leader and Music Director, directing and accompanying the NECC Ensemble (a mixed-generation choral group), the Children's Choir and vocal and instrumental soloists, as well as overseeing "all things worship- and music-related", including the church's Power Point and sound technology programs. She has also served on staff at NECC as the church's Christian Education Director and has chaired the Worship Committee, served as Council Chair, taught Sunday School to 1st & 2nd graders and high school youth, directed Vacation Bible School and led VBS music sessions, and served on the church's Visioning Team.
Diana continues to serve in a volunteer capacity in NECC's Sunday morning worship band and choir. She also serves as an Elder, the church's webmaster and as a member of the church's Promotion (publicity) Committee. Upon invitation, she also enjoys visiting other churches as a guest musician for worship, special events and programs, as well as providing pulpit supply. She can be contacted via the link below.
